Are you lined up with the Seasons! - 6 Simple ways to Super-Charge your Immune System.
Did
you know that autumn is a time to pull inward and strengthen your
immune system for the upcoming winter?
Autumn according to Traditional Chinese Medicine is known as the time of
the Lungs. The lungs receive the chi or vital energy of the air and mix it
with nutrients from your food to make immune defensive energy to
distribute throughout your body. When your lungs are strong, then your
immune system is healthy. This allows you to have more protection from
viruses, bacteria and other invading pathogens.
The emotion associated with the lungs is Grief. Grief that is expressed
and resolved strengthens your body’s ability to maintain vibrant health.
Grief that is repressed creates long term contraction of the lungs and
interferes with their ability to breathe in vital immune energy and
distribute the nutrients in your body properly. Therefore creating
stress on your immune system.
Almost everyone with lung and colon problems has some kind of sadness that
is locked in the organ that needs to be cleared.
Emotional healing and health is essential to keeping your immune
system strong and healthy, especially in a time of super viruses such as
H1N1.
At the same time the Colon is the paired organ to the lungs. The colon
when working properly helps to keep your lungs strong and your immune
systems in top working order. If your Colon is not letting go of waste, it
builds up causing energetic congestion and blockage in both the large
intestine and lungs.
Autumn is a great time to cleanse your colon to indirectly strengthen
your lungs and immunity. I would suggest a colon cleanse to kick start
the fall and your immune system.
In addition to emotional health, many problems of the lungs and colon are
due to a sedentary lifestyle. Lack of physical cardiovascular exercise
encourages poor respiration and elimination. Getting cardiovascular
exercise is vital to opening up your pours and allowing your body to sweat
out any toxins that may be inhibiting your immune system.
It is also very important to strengthen the lungs and immune system
through diet. Eating too much meat, dairy and not enough roughage
builds up mucous in the lungs and weakens their vital energy. Health
issues that result from mucous build up are allergies, asthma, colds,
sinus problems, bronchitis etc.
6 Simple Ways to Improve Your Immune System
1. Cleanse your colon and don’t forget to re-colonize with
friendly bacteria such as pro-biotics. Pro-biotics means FOR LIFE.
This is the first defense in your body’s immune system and it begins in
your Colon.
2. Build up and protect your mucous membranes with roughage in your
diet, greens such as spirulina or E3 Live. Even herbs such as slippery
elm bark and marshmallow root powder are very beneficial. When your mucous
membranes are healthy they catch and eliminate harmful viruses and
bacteria.
3. Make sure you are getting enough enzymes in your diet. Enzymes
are found in abundance in raw fresh vegetables. I like to mix raw
vegetables into any cooked meal that I might have for the enzyme content.
Enzymes are vital to every function in your body including a healthy
colon.
4. Keep your immune system strong with immune boosting herbs and
vitamins. One of my favorite herbs to strengthen the lungs,
increase white blood cells and ward off viruses is Astragalus. This
herb is also an adaptogenic herb and will help to keep all of your organs
and glands strong and healthy. It is also important to make sure you are
eating enough Vitamin C. Vitamin C is found in all fruits and
vegetables. In the winter we tend to turn more to the grains and a heavy
carbohydrate diet, not getting enough nutrient dense food. A high grain
diet will only spike your blood sugar and lower your immune system. Make
sure you are getting enough fruits and vegetables in your diet to keep
your immune system strong. It doesn’t hurt to supplement with Vitamin C as
well.
5. Vitamin D is an essential part of your immune system. In North
America we are generally not getting enough vitamin D. This essential
vitamin will keep your immune system healthy as well as your moods. A
lack of vitamin D can lead to feelings of depression and sadness. Sadness
when held in can lower your immune system.
6. Make sure you are getting enough exercise and purified water each
day. It is recommended to get at least a half an hour of
cardiovascular exercise each day, as well as 8 glasses of water
daily.
And remember ... laugh everyday! The energy of laughter can be very
healing ...
Follow these steps to a strong immune system throughout the winter and
you’ll be sure to keep the cold and flu bugs away.
